Diabetes — diagnosis and treatment in São Paulo

Care for type 1, type 2, gestational diabetes and prediabetes, with an individualized plan and modern monitoring technology.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition marked by high blood glucose levels. It may be caused by a lack of insulin (type 1), by resistance to insulin (type 2) or by specific changes during pregnancy.

Conditions we care for

  • Type 1 diabetes (adults and children)
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Prediabetes and metabolic syndrome
  • LADA and MODY (atypical forms)

How treatment works

Care combines lifestyle changes, modern medications (including GLP-1 and SGLT2 agents) and, when indicated, glucose sensors and insulin pumps. The goal is glucose control without hypoglycaemia and with quality of life. Every plan is defined during the consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Which tests confirm a diagnosis of diabetes?+

Fasting glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) ≥ 6.5% or an oral glucose tolerance test ≥ 200 mg/dL after 2 hours. Confirmation with two tests is usually required, except when there is clear hyperglycaemia with classic symptoms.

Does prediabetes always become diabetes? Can it be reversed?+

Without lifestyle changes, about 5–10% of people with prediabetes progress each year. Losing 5–7% of body weight, exercising regularly and adjusting eating habits reverse most cases and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by up to 58%.

Can people with diabetes use semaglutide or tirzepatide?+

Semaglutide and tirzepatide are GLP-1 and GIP/GLP-1 agents approved for type 2 diabetes and obesity, with proven cardiovascular and kidney benefit. The indication is individual and requires medical follow-up.

Do glucose sensors replace finger-prick testing?+

In most situations, yes. Continuous monitoring shows time in range, variability and alerts for low and high glucose. Finger-prick testing is still used in specific situations, such as when symptoms do not match the sensor reading.

Is there a cure for type 1 diabetes?+

Not yet. Current treatment uses insulin (pens or pumps), sensors and diabetes education. Research on cell therapy and immune modulation is advancing, but careful control to prevent complications remains the mainstay.
