Appointments and scheduling

How care with Dr. Lorena Amato works.

How do I book an appointment with Dr. Lorena Amato?+

Appointments are scheduled by the team via WhatsApp, on (11) 98823-9928. You can also write to equipe@endocrino.com. The team responds within 24 hours.

Where is the practice located?+

The practice is at Av. Brasil, 2.283 — Jardim América, São Paulo / SP, postal code 01430-001, in central São Paulo, with easy access by underground (Brigadeiro / Oscar Freire stations), bus and ride-hailing apps.

Are consultations private or covered by insurance?+

Private consultations only. Payment in full or by card. After the appointment you receive a receipt with the physician's CRM and RQE numbers, which you may submit to your health plan for reimbursement according to each insurer's rules.

How long does an appointment last?+

Appointment duration: approximately 1 hour, with a detailed history, physical examination and a treatment plan.

Do you see children, adolescents and adults?+

Yes. Dr. Lorena Amato practises adult and pediatric endocrinology, following patients from childhood through puberty and into adult life.

Is telemedicine available?+

Telemedicine available. An in-person appointment is preferable whenever possible, so a complete physical examination can be performed.

Thyroid

Hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, nodules and thyroiditis.

Which tests assess the thyroid?+

The main ones are TSH, free T4, T3 and, when indicated, antibodies (anti-TPO, anti-Tg, TRAb) and a thyroid ultrasound. Interpretation depends on symptoms, age, medications in use and clinical history.

Can hypothyroidism be cured?+

In most cases (Hashimoto's thyroiditis, post-surgical), it is a chronic condition controlled with levothyroxine replacement. The dose is adjusted periodically according to tests and symptoms.

Does every thyroid nodule need surgery?+

No. Most nodules are benign and simply followed with ultrasound. Fine-needle aspiration is indicated according to ultrasound risk criteria, and surgery is reserved for cases with suspected or confirmed malignancy, or for very large or symptomatic nodules.

Diabetes and metabolism

Prediabetes, type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes.

Which tests diagnose diabetes?+

Fasting glucose, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and, in some cases, an oral glucose tolerance test. Diagnosis requires confirmation with more than one measurement, except in clear hyperglycaemia with symptoms.

Is prediabetes reversible?+

In many cases, yes. Lifestyle changes — nutrition, physical activity and weight loss when indicated — can normalise blood glucose and reduce the risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes.

Can people with diabetes eat sugar?+

The focus is not sugar alone but the overall eating pattern: type and amount of carbohydrate, fibre, protein and fat. The plan is individualized with the endocrinologist and the dietitian.

Obesity and weight loss

Clinical treatment, medications and bariatric surgery.

Is obesity a disease?+

Yes. Obesity is a chronic, multifactorial disease with genetic, hormonal, environmental and behavioural components — it deserves long-term medical care, not willpower alone.

When is weight-loss medication indicated?+

With a BMI ≥ 30, or ≥ 27 with related conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea and others), and when lifestyle change alone does not achieve the needed result. The choice of medication is individual.

Are GLP-1 agents (such as semaglutide and tirzepatide) safe?+

When indicated and monitored by a physician, they have a good safety profile and efficacy proven in studies. They should not be used without a prescription, nor for cosmetic weight loss in people without a clinical indication.

Women's and men's hormone health

PCOS, menopause, andropause, testosterone and fertility.

What is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)?+

It is a common hormonal disorder in women of reproductive age that may cause irregular periods, acne, excess hair growth, insulin resistance and difficulty becoming pregnant. Treatment is individualized.

Is hormone replacement therapy in menopause safe?+

For most healthy women with symptoms, when started close to the onset of menopause, it is safe and effective. Indication, dose and route are defined after clinical assessment and tests.

When should low testosterone be investigated in men?+

When there are symptoms such as reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, loss of muscle mass, fatigue and mood changes, together with abnormal morning hormone levels on more than one measurement.

Pediatric endocrinology

Growth, puberty, childhood obesity and thyroid disease in children.

When should a child see a pediatric endocrinologist?+

Signs of short stature, growth below expectation, very early or delayed puberty, childhood obesity, thyroid changes and suspected diabetes are the main reasons.

Does early puberty always need treatment?+

No. The indication depends on age, speed of progression, impact on final height and emotional aspects. A full assessment includes physical examination, bone age and hormone measurements.
